  • Did you know that sexual abuse/assault trauma does not discriminate? The painful and humiliating effects that occur afterwards affects male the same as female and it hurts the same whether your race is black or white. The pain maybe universal but thank God so is the healing! So go get some hot chocolate and join Eugene Brooks and I around the fireplace as he has just completed an autobiography entitled Half Black Half White - Trying to Find My Place In America. In his book he chronicled his life and the road he traveled while finding his place in America. He candidly discuss the multitude of issues involved with growing up bi-racial and the confusion that was present during his life due to his nebulous of identity. This "identity crisis," coupled with physical and sexual abuse as a child, led to several addictions. After years of drug and alcohol abuse, brushes with the criminal justice system, and homelessness, he met a man who inspired him and taught him how to be a man. This life-altering event eventually led him to graduating from law school and financial success. In addition to teaching him how to navigate life as a black man , this man also taught him how to be a caring and loving human being. Eugene's mentor answered a question that he had been in search of all my life. Who he was and where to find His Place in America? • Call in # is 646-478-0417 We welcome Colleen Kiesel today, her book is "Celebration of Life." My website is http://www.womensrecreation, her book is there as well. Celebration of Life is a true life account of a seven-year-old boy who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia a form of childhood cancer. The story is written in a journal form, from a mother to her child. The journal tells the story of a family buried in crisis. It relates the difficulties placed on family and marriage. It offers new views on human relationships and mankind’s basic goodness. It examines the role of spiritual resources and probes emotions in crisis from shock, disbelief, fear and anger to acceptance, resolution and personal growth. The stress and emotions experienced by all family members are described and the importance of extended family love, support and involvement during crises is illustrated. Trauma associated with chemotherapy is also described. Furthermore a mother’s disintegration as she struggles for emotional stability is clearly and powerfully depicted. The story concludes as the family rejoices after more than two-and-a- half years of leukemia treatment are successfully completed. Celebration of Life is a story of bravery, hope and spiritual growth in the face of devastating odds. It’s about good days and bad days. It's about tragedy and triumph. It's about faith, hope and survival. It's a story full of information, education, emotional turmoil and support. But most of all, Celebration of Life is about survival. You can find this book on my Book Reviews on my website at http://www.womensrecreation.com.

  • 04/12/11--17:00: Handling Stress After a Traumatic Event - Apr 13,2011 (chan 2930362)
  • Sometime in our lives we will unfortunately witness or be impacted by a traumatic event. We hear about these situations in the media all of the time…a very disgruntled employee who kills their boss and then commits suicide; witnessing the terrorist attacks of the World Trade Center towers; a bank teller who is robbed at gun point; a bus accident involving the death of children; or a natural disaster like that of the recent earthquakes and tsunami that hit Japan. All of these situations create what is called critical incident stress. We bring the topics of stress management and emotion management as part of National Stress Awareness month. And tonight, we focus on stress and trauma whether it is in the workplace or in your personal lives. We will talk with Denise Thompson with Crisis Response Consulting, about how you can identify the signs and signals of this kind of traumatic stress; and mechanisms for coping during these difficult times. Denise Thompsonis the founder and owner of Crisis Response Consulting, a graduate of Florida State University, a licensed clinical social worker and a Lt Col in the Air Force Reserves. Recently she served 8 years of active duty, including 2 deployments following September 11, 2001. Denise has also provided crisis intervention and organizational consultation following airplane and helicopter crashes, homicides, suicides, line-of-duty deaths, man-made and natural disasters, robberies and combat.

  • 12/01/11--22:00: Paul Gilbertson - Dec 02,2011 (chan 2930362)
  • In 2007, Childrens Book Author, Paul Gilbertson, and his wife, Chris, wanted to find a way to help children who are unfortunate victims of crises. When the little town of Gays Mills, Wisconsin was flooded that same year, Paul jumped at the chance to try and improve the situation for all the children who were affected by the disaster. Paul and his daughter packed up the car with boxes of childrens books and started their journey. A few hours later, the two arrived at the scene only to be greeted by yellow police tape, first responders and emergency vehicles. Although this first attempt to "Bring a smile to the face of a child in the time of need" was not successful, it was just the beginning. On the drive home that day, Paul realized in order to REACH a Child at the time of crisis, he needed to team up with the people who arrive at the unfortunate crisis first. Out of this experience the R.E.A.C.H. a Child "B.A.C.K. Packets" program was born, this initiative centers around providing approximately 10-12 various childrens books to officers and first responders in a red backpack for them to give to children that they see at the scene of an accident, fire, domestic disturbance or in other traumatic situations. Currently these red backpacks are in over 15k squad cars and ambulances. Within our first two years we have donated over 175k childrens books to children in crisis.

  • 12/07/11--17:00: Stop Child Abuse Now (SCAN) - 198 - Dec 08,2011 (chan 2930362)
  • Tonights SPECIAL GUEST is Brian Lewis, a survivor of sexual assault while serving in the American military. During a tour of duty in the US Navy, Petty Officer Lewis, a submariner, was sexually assaulted by a superior non–commissioned officer. While the predator was known to the command for committing these types of acts before, he was never charged. But Brian was unfairly discharged from the service with a diagnosis of his having a "personality disorder." Hes still fighting the Veterans Administration for appropriate treatment for his PTSD, a direct result of his experiencing Military Sexual Trauma (MST). In 2010, there were 19,000 cases of sexual assault reported in the military, resulting in some 3,000 courts martial. Although Brian was subsequently granted disability, he continues to struggle with a frustrating and self-protecting military medical services system. He supports the efforts of Jackie Speier (D-CA, 12 District) who in November 2011 introduced the STOP Act, H.R. 3435, a bill that seeks to revise how the military deals with cases of sexual trauma. Please see: Service Womens Action Network ServiceWomen.org, the Military Rape Crisis Center StopMilitaryRape.org, and Protect our Defenders ProtectOurDefenders.com/main where theres a petition drive in support of these issues.
